Bowmer + Kirkland first to use innovative Revolution Battery to decarbonise crane operations

Dumarey Green Power, part of the Dumarey group, announces the first commercial use of its new Revolution Battery system.

Typical battery systems require large amounts of stored energy to generate high peak power. However, while many applications require high power, they only need this high power for a few seconds. As a result, comparatively little energy is used during operations. The required energy can often be supplied by the available mains connection or a small, efficient generator set. As a result, storing large amounts of energy in a battery system is not needed.

Revolution Battery is an industrial battery energy storage system (BESS) which breaks the link between energy storage and output power. This innovative battery system incorporates a battery pack which can deliver high amounts of power from a comparatively small amount of energy storage. This results in a smaller battery system with much reduced use of battery cells, higher efficiency and lower embedded emissions. Dumarey Green Power produces its Revolution Battery in the UK, utilising local labour & suppliers as well as minimising transport emissions in the large UK construction market.

Launch customer Falcon Tower Cranes immediately deployed their first Revolution Battery to a Bowmer + Kirkland construction site in Nottingham, where the system has been set to work powering a Jaso J118pa and a Jaso J138A tower crane. Traditionally these cranes would have been powered from a 200kVA generator. Such a large generator results in significant CO2 and other local emissions.

Instead of the large diesel genset, the Revolution Battery allows these cranes to be powered from only a 32A mains connection. As a result, Dumarey Green Power expects that the Revolution Battery will save around 800 litres of fuel and over 2T of CO2e per week.

Revolution Battery is a valuable extension to the modular product portfolio that Dumarey Green Power is able to offer. Each product in the Dumarey Green Power product range either focuses on Power or on Energy and therefore enables savings that generalist products cannot achieve.

By now Dumarey Green Power has deployed around 250 UK made & highly durable, flywheel energy storage systems. These have now saved in excess of 6.5 million litres of fuel & over 20,000 tonnes of CO2.

Where applications need a lot of energy, Dumarey Green Power deploys its second life battery products. These utilise energy dense battery modules that have been used on busses or trucks before becoming part of our PowerSkid and EnergySkid products. 2nd life batteries enable battery systems with the lowest embedded emissions.

Jon Drakeley, Product Director of Dumarey Green Power commented “Our new Revolution Battery allows even the heaviest tower cranes in the country to be powered from just a 32A mains supply. Revolution Battery will play a significant part in reducing the use of generators, avoiding wasted emissions & fuel usage.
Our partnership with Falcon Tower Crane and Bowmer + Kirkland saw the first battery units go directly from the factory to a customer site, where they were quickly installed to cut both emissions and save money running the tower cranes.”

Rupert Cook, Associate Service Director at Falcon Tower Crane Services Ltd commented on the suitability of the system for powering their large fleet of tower cranes, “Battery Energy Storage Systems have been making rapid inroads into the tower crane market, and Falcon Tower Cranes have been at the forefront of this change. Our new fleet of Revolution Batteries allows us to power large cranes from a small power supply. Early testing has shown we can run three cranes from a single system. The system is smaller than one of our large generators and installation can be done in just moments, making it ideal for busy sites where space and time are at a premium. We already have customers for the first delivery of systems, and with their history of innovation it was no surprise that Bowmer + Kirkland were first in the queue!”

Dave Shooter, Lifting Manager at Bowmer + Kirkland emphasised the important of decarbonisation in lifting operations. “Bowmer + Kirkland is committed to reducing our carbon footprint using technological advances to ensure that our processes are more efficient. In 2022 we won two categories at the British Construction Industry Awards using flywheel technology developed by Dumarey Green Power – Net Zero Carbon Initiative of the Year and the overall Initiative of the Year. We are very pleased to be working once again with the Dumarey team on the Revolution battery. Cutting the use of diesel generators as much as possible is key to decarbonising our lifting operations and battery systems have a major part to play in making that possible.
